You recently moved back to Colombia after 15 years of being in France. How is the support system different for mothers there, as it is for mothers here (France)?
In Colombia, there is a much bigger gap between SECs and urban vs rural regions. Most mothers, in rural areas or lower SECs, have little/poor medical support, education and health conditions; the conditions in hospitals to give birth are the minimum required and the public health system still has a lot to do.
The small % who have access to private health services benefit from much more and better quality support overall, although amongst them, c-sections are more common than in France and I see an opportunity to bring more humanization and empowerment overall for these families.
"La familia" is still a pillar for the mother regardless of SEC differences, and most grandparents play an active role in mother's support through pregnancy and during the postpartum period. This support comes from the whole community in rural areas where the access to health services is less and where there are bigger families.
Overall, there is also more formal and informal breastfeeding support starting before birth, reflecting the higher breastfeeding rate compared to France.
